Iron-Blooded Orphans fic section breaks - part 4(ish)

So, funny story. I actually only introduced one new character section break in the fourth arc of Wishing on Space Hardware (392,000 words and counting, cor blimey). Most of the action in Schemes and daydreams is from the point of view of characters I already included previously and the bits that aren’t don’t qualify for section breaks of their own. But, thankfully, I did go to the trouble of editing the first fic in the whole series, A Handful of Rusted Petals, to include some additional breaks that I’m going to need for the final arc. Given that the fic I’m currently writing will involve roughly a bazillion characters’ POVs, I thought I’d split the difference and post some of those retroactive section breaks here, so that Argi doesn’t get lonely. Roll tape!

IBO fanfiction Idea dump

OK, so I've been formulating this for a while the basic premise being like Tekkadan a group of human debris mutiny against their pirate masters who through trickery and sheer luck were in a relatively good position. Having inherited their master's assets they then like tekkadan go on fighting not quite knowing what else to do with themselves and hoping that they can acquire enough to start over and to the fragile hope of some in the crew of not being completely sucked into the darkness of the underworld. So if you can already tell, unlike the main show, I was thinking of going deeper into what at least appeared to me to be the darker side of the post-disaster timeline 'cause we see constant mentions of human trafficking and other crimes, that being said this might just also come out the back of me watching edgy anime like black lagoon and cyberpunk edge runners, and while we see the abuse that the CGS was heaping on orga and company I can't help think that human debris under actual criminals would have had a lot worse like Aston and Derma who felt they had to bury themselves in order not to break, the main show does do a somewhat good job at showing the cost in humanity that some characters have had to pay. the thought I settled on is how the trauma they endured would shape their actions and outlook of the solar system, for example, the protagonists constantly being told and having beaten into them that they're nothing and no one will see them as more than that and to that end them trying to stick to the shadows as much as possible and be careful with who they interact with and trust. On the topic of people that they can trust in the main series, I found that there were a few notable individuals who attempted to keep Tekkadan grounded and in some ways preserve what humanity they had left like Atra Mixta and Merribit Stapleton my initial idea is that among the protagonists there would be doctors and technical engineers that the afore mention pirates kidnapped and or tricked into working for them and despite the harsh working conditions and threats the pirates they're the only ones who ever treated the boys with care, of course, that sense of care and worry would only grow as they watch them descend back into the underworld but can't fully bring themselves to stop them because of a mixture of guilt and fear since despite being kidnapped and or tricked they were still being paid by the pirates and therefore fear they would still be charged if they were caught as well as guilt for profiting off the boys suffering. Another element of the story I was thinking of adding was the addition of a group of girls born of gallarhorn officers who tried to expose slash point out the flaws and corruption of Gallarhorn but of course, got squashed for it, and in a desperate bid to keep their daughter safe unknowingly flung them into the harsh reaches of space where they are then saved from slavery themselves by the protagonists and join the crew and of course romantic hijinks will ensue as well as them joining the doctors and engineers in worrying about a loss in humanity. One sticking point of this story is whether I wanted it to occur before or during the main series since before would show that child soldiers rising up and people trying to get gallarhorn to change has happened before, or starting sometime just before the main series and I guess would show how everything was bound to come crashing down, that being said I am unsure whether through their actions the protagonists should unintentionally or accidentally change the course of the main series because yes I didn't completely like the ending but I didn't completely hate it either.

Yuletide 2018 (and other updates)

I return from the traditional end-of-year hiatus with fic!  

Foreign Atlases: From Mars to Earth and back again, the process of building Derma's prosthetic, and the longer process of getting him to accept it.

The requisite Yuletide IBO fic.  It's by no small measure the longest fic I've written for an assignment in the seven years I've been doing Yuletide, but I guess that's to be expected when someone asks for fic about one of the Human Debris cast!  The ending on this one gave me some fits--balancing an OC doctor for lack of any good fits for the role in the canon--but on the whole I'm pretty pleased with it.  It's got some worldbuilding and talk about the setting's spirituality, a load of material between Dante and Derma, and what I thought was a nicely tidy folding of Yamagi's feelings for Shino into his feelings on Derma's situation and what to do about it.  I had a little exchange between Merribit and Yukinojo that it killed me to cut; I may throw it up on my Kofi in a few days.  Keep an eye out!

Composing Our Collapse:  Character by character, line by line, the four youths who will become the warlords write their relationship together before writing it apart.

The apparently-now-a-requisite Yuletide Ronin fic, this time in the form of a Soulmate AU set back during the warlords’ mortal days.  This is one that could have been much longer if I'd pressed on into their lives after being recruited by Talpa, but I didn't have a neat ending in mind for that and it would have ballooned the length hugely; it was also already unbalancing towards favoring Cale more than I had initially intended.  I like some of the scenes I wrote, though; they may likewise find their way to Kofi posting eventually.  

A Short Peace: Winter in Tokyo is a misery, especially when a certain someone hasn't been answering his e-mail.

CANIS: The Speaker is an extremely good, vividly rendered BL manga with a canonical poly relationship between its three protagonists, who all skew older than the norm.  It engages in some of the genre's more melodramatic elements (organized crime, prostitution), but is somewhat unique in that has a lot more time for politics and a lot less time for rape-as-love than many of its peers who share those elements.  It's a bit of an odd duck in that it's a spin-off/prequel of a much more normal BL series in which The Speaker's protags are peripheral antagonist figures, but you don't particularly need to read the other CANIS installments (Hello Mr. Hatter and Hello Mr. Rain) to follow The Speaker.  (Though FWIW those installments are also quite fine in their own regard and the Speaker trio's material is all excellent).       Anyway, as you can see by my shilling, I like the series a lot, and I also like canonical poly relationships, so I knew I wanted to write something for the series when I saw the request go up.  This is not a long fic, just a bit of dabbling with where they are shortly after the upheaval the most recently-available chapters are headed for.  Not quite dark, not quite fluffy, it's as ambiguous as its leads, who are all kind of worried about the future but fiercely determined to protect the present they've just regained.

In other news, I’m so, so close to having the next chapter of the IBO wedding fic done; I just need to sit down and hammer it out.  I’ve also been trying to knead a (highly id-ficcy) Hugtto Precure story about Listor and George into existence, because Hugtto’s Hamster Family Drama is annihilating my soul right now and I need to memorialize my feelings about Listor’s terrible coping mechanisms.  Of all things, I’ve also started poking very hesitantly at that enormous Fate/Zero fanfic again, though I am skeptical that an update will come of that in anything like short order.  I also have a huge pile of ask-memes and the like that may get posted on my still-pretty-barren Pillowfort account at some point.

One thing I am really enjoying about Iron Blooded Orphans is they aren’t playing around when it comes to the tête-à-têtes concerning relationships and feelings. Something that the Japanese are KNOWN for dancing around the subject of.

Everyone was freaking out earlier this year over Yuri On Ice!!! But those scenes between Shino and Yamagi ARE ON THE SAME LEVEL. Add on top of that the relationship that developed between Merribit and Nady, the heavy suggestions that something was going to happen between Lafter and Akihiro, and this awesome love triangle they have going on between Atra, Mika, and Kudelia AND I JUST HAVE TO SAY THAT IT ADDS SUCH A BELIEVABLE LAYER TO EVERYONE IN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL MANNER and makes you really care for their safety causing you to yell at your device and thank god you live by yourself.

Seriously guys, Gundam Wing was the reason I fell in anime fandom hell at the tender age of 10 watching it on toonami with my older brother and Iron Blooded Orphans has revived those intense feelings of obsession with space travel, mechas, and the gundam world in general. AND the correspondences and scenes that I used to beg for in Gundam Wing (1XR for life!!) I am finally getting in Iron Blooded Orphans.

I just love it so much.

Since you’ve been listing IBO character names.. Amida could have actually been named after the Buddhist with the same name. Lafter Frankland and Merribit Stapleton, their full names, came from the Sherlock Holmes novels.

Gundam IBO Gundam Wing

Okay, for the record, setting this in a fictional timeline in which everyone is simultaneously alive and present. Also I didn’t watch the last half-season of IBO so I am unaware of things that happened in that period of time.

the characters i’d ship

Honestly probably no one.  Honestly, I’m not much of a shipper, even in crossovers.  

the characters who would be BFFs

Relena and Kudelia, definitely--they have very similar backstories and positions and they tend to try to make allies first before making enemies.  Also probably Atra and Catherine Bloom, as both of those two are “caring sister” types with spines of absolute freakin’ steel underneath (and a fair bit of childhood trauma; Catherine’s an orphan who grew up in a circus after all).  Those two would probably also get along with Biscuit and Hilde, who are smart and used to hanging back in support roles and would also be friends, I think.

Lady Une and Fumitan would get each other.  They might not talk much but they’d hang out.  Their personalities are similar enough.

Sally Po, Merribit Stapleton, and Nady Yukinojo Kassapa would form a sort of informal commiseration group, most likely with alcohol, dedicated to the subject of “why won’t these kids stay out of the fighting.”  If you adhere to Sally’s (ridiculously young for her appearance and role) canon age, she can have sparkling grape juice.

the characters who would be enemies

With regard to Treize, Zechs, McGillis and Gaelio...well, it depends on which point in canon I’m considering them to be at exactly how many of them are fighting each other, but it’s safe to say that during a crossover the protagonists wouldn’t actually have to worry about them, because they’d be too busy fighting each other, in one configuration or another.   All of them are capable of being goal-oriented but are able to be derailed by a good challenge, which the others present.  Whoops.

We’re just going to hope that Relena doesn’t find out about the Turbines.  She will jump to very bad conclusions and probably attempt to “liberate” a bunch of very capable robot pilots and support staff from their place of work and chosen refuge.  She would not like Naze, and even if she found out that the harem thing was a cover, she’d still probably disapprove.  I think she’s capable of learning the value of subterfuge but in canon that isn’t a thing she’s yet managed.

the characters who would be allies

Quatre and Orga would very quickly work out that there were enough similarities in their goals to make collaboration worthwhile, and further, that the other was sharp enough to make collaboration a rewarding experience.

They would probably end up making an arrangement by which the entire Tekkadan and the Gundam pilots would be somewhat allied.  In a formal fashion that wasn’t too binding and allowed for the fact that Quatre’s got a Heero and a Duo and Orga’s got a Mika and a Eugene.

the characters who would be allies, but reluctantly

Lucretia Noin, Crank Zent, Naze Turbine and Amida Arca are reluctantly invited to the drinking-and-commiseration group.  Noin’s and Zent’s invitations are reluctant because they keep fighting the children, Naze’s is so because he “runs a harem” and lets some of the 18yos in it fight (and Amida is party to it).  Naze, of course, isn’t about to tell strangers about the whole flying women’s shelter thing, and Merribit and Nady are keeping his secrets for him, so Sally still objects to his inclusion.

Mika and Heero are too alike and too paranoid to trust one another but since both groups are in some senses fighting for their respective sets of colonies both of them would have to buckle down and get along.

the characters who would drive each other bananas

Wufei and...really, most of the Tekkadan would absolutely grate on each other’s nerves.  It gets exaggerated in fic, Wufei doesn’t go around yelling “Honor!” in canon, but ideologically, he does fight according to a code of honor, the same way Crank Zent did.  Zent’s death was a demonstration of how foreign that concept is to the Tekkadan.  They fight to survive; ethics and codes don’t enter into their considerations, so Wufei approaching those subjects would fray tempers fast.  And their refusal to listen to his input would tick Wufei off just as badly.

Duo would take personal offense at Eugene’s grumpiness and probably try to fix it.  He might at least not go after Mika once it became clear that Mika was even more likely to shoot him than Heero, but Eugene?  Eugene is getting teased until he loosens the heck up.  Eugene will not appreciate this.

the characters i think are the most alike

Kudelia and Relena start from a very similar place.  I feel like Kudelia is something like what I would have liked to see happen with Relena.

my favorite character from each fandom & how i think they would get along

Duo and Orga...they’d be dangerous.  Orga would have a plan and Duo would make suggestions of how to make it more effective but also like 2 times more risky (which is never a thing that Orga’s plans need to begin with, mind!) and it would work, because Duo is in fact that good, in addition to being an actual daredevil with a superweapon. Duo, meanwhile, loves Orga’s plans, though he does like to...embellish.  Usually with extra explosions.  Orga, who’s used to Mika following plans to the letter, doesn’t like this at first, but Duo’s additions usually work, and he learns to go with it.
